Abstract:

Statistical analysis of non-normal data is usually more complicated than that for normaldistribution. In this paper, a simple root/power transformation technique developed by Niaki, et al [1]is extended to transform right and left skewed distributions to nearly normal. The value of theroot/power is explored such that the skewness of the transformed data becomes almost zero with anacceptable error. The proposed method is then compared to the well-known and complicated Box, etal [2] transformation method for different left and right skewed distributions using Monte Carlosimulation. While the proposed procedure is easy to understand and to implement, the results of thesimulation study show that it works as good as the Box-Cox method.

A Simple State-Space Reduction Method

We are often interested in finding out if a given predicate on states of a system can be satisfied in any or all of the systems reachable states. To determine this, one approach is to calculate the complete set of reachable states and evaluate the predicate on each of these states. To know which states we have already examined and which we have yet to examine—and thus knowing when we have exami...

Silver nanoplates and nanowires by a simple chemical reduction method.

This paper describes a simple preparation of single-crystalline Ag-nanoparticles including plates, and wires in water by truncated triangular particles for the first time during the reduction of [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ complex with glucose at room temperature. Silver particles were characterized by means of the conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-VIS spectroscopy. Cetyltrimethylammon...

A Simple Method to Improve Hazelnut Grafting

Hazelnuts are usually propagated by suckers or layering. However, other methods of propagation have been tested with variable results. Grafting is a method that has a few advantages such as fast multiplication rate, earlier fruiting and reducing sucker removal cost on specific rootstocks. Unfortunately, grafting is difficult due to slow formation of callus in hazelnuts. Here, we report the hypo...

Simple self-reduction method for anterior shoulder dislocation

Shoulder dislocations represent more than 50% of all major joint dislocations and the most frequent type (>90%) of this injury is anterior shoulder dislocation[1-3]. Acute anterior shoulder dislocations usually are orthopaedic emergency cases, where reduction as the most effective pain relief therapy should be performed as soon as possible. The injury mechanisms responsible for anterior shoulde...

a Simple Speed Control Technique and Pulsating Torque Elimination Method in a Brushless Dc Motor

This paper presents a theoretical derivation and computer simulation of an optimal speed controller for a brushless dc motor using feedback from a linear model running in parallel with the inverter-fed model. The intent of the feedback from the linear model is to eliminate torque ripples from the inverter drive. A nonlinear model of such a motor, transformed into a linear model by a local diphe...
